Diesel Particulate Filters DPFs

Countless hours of research and development were invested into learning about the design and function of DPF systems and how they work. When the light pops-up on the dash, there’s not many companies who can offer the same expertise in diagnosing and repairing these systems as Western Autos can.

We don’t just carry out regeneration or DPF cleaning, but we tackle the root of what’s caused the blockage and educate you (as a driver) on how to avoid future repairs or costly replacements saving, repair time, hassle and money.

  • What is a DPF? +

Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) are part of the emission control system of a vehicle. They are fitted into the exhaust line, after the catalytic converter.

DPFs can however be either combined with the catalyst or a separate unit after the catalyst.

    Why do we need DPFs?

Even the most modern diesel engines produce fine soot particles (PM10’s), which although invisible to the naked eye, cause irritation to the eyes, respiratory tract, and in more severe cases are directly linked to lung cancer. The DPF collects and stores this matter preventing soot from coming out of the exhaust exit.

    Why do filters become blocked?

In short-journey or city driving diesel cars may only reach an exhaust temperatures of approx 200°C.

Consequently regeneration does not take place, or the vehicle is parked before regeneration has been completed.

If this process is repeated over a period of time, the soot build-up can reach a level where regeneration is not sufficient to clear the blockage and the resulting back-pressure causes a loss in vehicle performance. In these cases the entire DPF unit must often be replaced. Some systems use extra fuel borne catalysts. Failure to top up fluid can also cause a blockage.

  • Diagnosis +

Before we can offer any form of repair it’s vital we discover the initial cause of the problem. Under Normal driving conditions using good quality fuels, correct driving style, adhering to manufacture service specifications using correct engine oils DPF filters clean and regenerate by themselves.

If a DPF warning is indicated dont delay, waiting can cause further more costly problems, get the car to someone who can identify and solve the problem as soon as possible. We can repair DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter equipped vehicles and do so on a daily basis. We can often clean blocked DPF filters on the car, sometimes they need to be removed to be cleaned if they are causing a high restriction. We can also top up and regenerate DPF system with Eolys or the recommended fluid and for a range of vehicles remove the DPF from both the vehicle and the ECU by reprogramming the ECU.

But unfortunately in the real world DPF’s become quickly blocked and damaged causing a wide range of faults including. Poor performance, poor MPG so it’s important we resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

  • Regeneration +

In order to operate fully, the DPF needs to operate a regeneration process to evacuate the soot that has been collected. Depending on driving style, regeneration takes places every 300 to 500 miles.

When the DPF is about 45-50% of its capacity, pressure sensors consider the DPF as full.

There are two kinds of regeneration:

    • Passive regeneration – When the exhaust gas temperature reaches 550°C – 650°C, the soot is burnt off.
    • Forced regeneration – Includes carrying out forced regeneration by command of the ECU using sophisticated diagnostic equipment.

We would only carry this process out knowing there are no faults within the engine causing initial blockage.
